How happy we were to be with R.I. family once more!
We visited with Brynne, Tami + Kent in the a.m. Then Bert, Kent + I drove over to Cranston to watch Erich's team win 7-1.
After a nice dinner of eggplant lasagna + spinach we worked the President puzzle that we bought at Gettysburg + watched the movie “Beethoven” a cute movie about a dog who saves the day.
Erich + Kyle spent the night here.
10/4/92 Rumford
This morning the boys, Brynne + I walked the neighbor’s dog, Achers, to the park. While Brynne attended a birthday party, the rest of us went to the Price Club store. It’s similar to Sam’s – a large warehouse type store.
Tami went to her Juniors’ meeting, the boys (Bert, Kent, Erich + Kyle) went to Erich’s game + I stayed with Brynne.
We treated the kids to a pizza/pasta dinner + retired early.
10/5/92 Rumford - Bath, Ohio
Drove 12 hours to Dottie + Jim G’s in Bath, Ohio. Beautiful foliage across Pa. on Rt. 80.
We had a great visit with Dottie and Jim G for a few days.
10/6/92 The Ws (Barb + Woodie) + the Ss of Orrville (Kate + Frank) came for a wonderful day! Dottie cooked a delicious 7 course dinner.
10/7/92 Left Bath in a.m. Saw some other Marco Island friends.
Had lunch with Ron + Edith U. Then moved on to Rocky River and spent the rest of the day with Marie + Ray McN. They entertained the Erie Rd gang and us for cocktails + then we went to the Wilshire Grill for dinner on Clifton + 104th. Nice visit with Dar + Sue L, Pat + Warren S + Janet + Frank C.
10/8/92 Spent the a.m. touring downtown Cleve. with Ray +Marie to see all the changes that have taken place since we moved to Florida. Had lunch at their house. Went to Westgate + Marc’s shopping. Dinner at Don’s River City with Marie + Ray. Choir practice in P.M.
10/9/92 Moved to Bay Village with Phyllis + Dan K in afternoon. Helen had us for cocktails – Anne + Tom E, Phyllis + Dan K joined us. Helen joined us for dinner at K’s.
10/10/92 Dan drove us to the Museum of Natural History after breakfast to see the La Brea Tar Pits exhibit. Toured the Garden Center, then went back to their pace for lunch. Dinner at Iron Gate.
10/11/92 Sang with Chancel Choir at Rocky River Pres. It was David T’s last Sun. We saw a lot of our friends at the reception for him afterwards.
10/12/92 Rocky River - Columbus
Drove down Rt. 71 to Dublin + the colors were the most vibrant of any foliage so far! We had a delicious meal at Mark Pi’s China Gate with Grace + Ed T after visiting Edith and Ron U at their new villa in Hilliard.
10/13/92 Columbus - Springfield, Ohio
Left after breakfast for S’fld where we spent two days with Mary Jane B and we caught up with all the news there. She showed us all the improvements in Springfield – the library, Y, Senior Center, etc. We drove out in the country + got apples - the best I’ve ever tasted! Watched TV + retired early.
10/14/92
The last night of our 3 week tour was spent at the Travelodge in Athens, Ala. We ate dinner at the Cracker Barrel, watched the VP debates + World Series playoffs. As I’m writing our Braves are getting clobbered + I’m about ready to call it quits.

9/24/92 Pensacola/Sweetwater, Tenn.
Left Pensacola at 7:30 + arrived at our Quality Inn in Sweetwater around 4:30 – 456 mi. It was good getting behind the wheel of the van again after 6 mos recuperating from shoulder surgery.
Dinner at the Cracker Barrel – good turkey, dressing, the works.
Read, watched a little TV + retired early.
9/25/92 Sweetwater/Falmouth
Got away at 8 am for Joyce + Rob’s in Falmouth, Va. The skies opened up on us shortly after noon + the windshield wipers got a steady workout. Joyce + Rob arrived shortly after we did from work. Had a delicious shrimp dinner at Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in Fredericksburg. Gabe is a delightful 8 yr old! We watched 20-20 + had long discussions on world affairs, family values, etc.
9/26/92 Falmouth
We did the shops on Caroline St. in Fredericksburg after breakfast at the Virginia Deli. (We crossed the Rappahonneck River from Falmouth to Fredericksburg.) The afternoon was spent at Lake Anna in Spotsylvania Co. visiting Audrey G, Rob’s mother. Her cottage is unique with beautiful furniture from her world travels. Her lead glass + jewelry designs are outstanding!
9/27/92 Falmouth/Gettysburg
After a hearty breakfast with Joyce, Rob + Gabe we took off for Gettysburg about 10:30. At Chancellorsville we retraced this important Civil War battle with the help of the park ranger. This was followed by a 12 min. slide show in the auditorium at the station. Our Elderhostel at the Day’s Inn began at 4:30 after check-in where we were given our info packets. After dinner we had an interesting talk on gravestone epitaphs by Mira Graves! We looked over our brochures + watched TV before retiring early.

Today’s speakers were excellent. Charles Fennell spoke on Three Days in July + Gary Shaffer talked about the place + people of Gettysburg. The Accounts of a Civil War was about a Capt. David Atcheson of Washington, Pa. a heroic soldier who was killed at Gettysburg at the age of 21. It was a slide presentation by Sally Walter. After dinner we learned about the artillery that was used. It was an exciting day.

Again we had classes in the morning much the same as yesterday but with emphasis on the second day of battle.
In the afternoon we took a tour to Eisenhower’s farm + visited Electric Map at the Visitors Center.
The farm covered 189 acres originally but was transformed by stages into the 230 acre estate of our 34th Pres.
The Electric Map is 750 sq. ft. + has 600 lights representing the landmarks, points of interest, fighting + movements of both the Union + Confed. forces.
9/30/92 Gettysburg
After breakfast we boarded the bus for the Cyclorama. This is a large circular painting 356’x26’ with a sound + light program recreating the scene of the fighting on the third day of the battle. This battle, known as Pickett’s Charge, marked a turning point in the war for the Confederacy. Robt. E. Lee sent 12,000 men into the battle. All told these three days of bitter fighting cost over 50,000 lives.
We toured some of the sights to see the monuments in the afternoon with our knowledgeable instructor Chas. Fennell. Dinner at Gettysburg College.
10/1/92 Gettysburg
We boarded the bus with Charles Fennell instructing on the battlefield tour. Places we covered were Culp’s Hill + Big + Little Round Top. This was the culmination of the third day of battle which was a terrible defeat for the Confederates.
Afternoon was spent on a walking tour with Gary Shaffer taking us through the downtown area.
We were given coasters at graduation for having moved from the “north coast of U.I. to south coast of U.I.”
10/2/92 Gettysburg/Providence
It was a real treat to have Tom Jolin come this a.m. to play the hammer dulcimer, button accordion, harmonica + banjo for us. Gary Shaffer gave us the conclusion to his People + Places talk. After lunch we took off for Kent’s arriving there about 9:30 after a hectic drive over the Tappan Zee Bridge, Conn. Thruway + into Providence on I-95 driving a total of 398 miles today. The only stops we made en route were at an apple + fruit stand outside Gettysburg, and a sandwich in E. Conn. It was wonderful seeing the kids + we were happy to have arrived safely – 1509 miles from home.

5/11/92 Trip to San Antonio. I-10 to overnight in
Houston. LaQuinta accommodations a lot to be desired. Everything built on a
slant. Tight security, Nice conversation with Lois Campbell. Dinner next door
at Denny’s.
5/12/92 So deeply engrossed in Civil War tape enroute
to SA that we nearly ran out of gas. Sweaty palms and red light on dash
reminded us we were in trouble. Harwood, Texas + a lonely Exxon tank at a
general store on a lonely country road came to the rescue. Good to see Bob +
Gen at the Meadows. Lovely home. Lunch at Luby’s + dinner in the dining room. A
tour of the extensive Medical Center in p.m.
5/13/92 A beautiful day. Toured Old Mexico Village in
a.m. Had lunch at Mi Tierra. Saw dramatic rendition of the “Alama” at the IMAX
theatre at River Center. Dinner in the dining room at the Meadows, then a movie
Bigfoot – hilarious – at Bob + Gen’s.
5/14/92 Tom met us + we followed him around the loop
too their beautiful home on Wing Foot Lane. Spent the day driving around the
area. Saw deer in the State Park + many lovely homes along the Guadalupe River.
Also visited the Jim Avery Jewelry Store.
5/15/92 Left Kerrville early for Baton Rouge where we
spent the night at the Hampton Inn after a Chinese Buffet. A long day’s drive!

Nov. 17, 1991 Pensacola – Point Clear, Ala.
Checked into the Grand Hotel at 3:30. Registered with Faulkner State College + got room assignment – lovely room overlooking small lake at North Bay House. Introductions were made at the Jubilee Room + then we boarded the bus for dinner at the Nautilus in Spanish Fort, about 10 mi. north of Fairhope. The shrimp creole + house salad were good + the conversation around our table with Sam + Helen B from Baton Rouge was fun – lots of war stories. Watched Browns/Oilers game on TV.
Nov. 18, ‘91
After breakfast we boarded the bus for Dahlgren Hall in Fairhope where we studied about Aquatic Resource Management with Bill Tucker of Dept of Nat. Resources. John Sledge gave us a short course in Historic Churches. After lunch Joyce Dickey began her lecture + slide presentation of Three Davids beginning with Donatello + the early Renaissance of 15th C.

Greeks – Human body – Idealized
Contropposto – Polyclidus – weight shift
Egyptian – Clothed
Romans grabbed everything.
She was a delightful instructor.
In the evening we had dinner at the Cock of the Walk at Spanish Fort. Had catfish – good.
Two lectures in PM on Catholic + Protestant religions.
Nov. 19 ‘91
After breakfast we boarded the bus for the campus.
We had a slide presentation + talk by John Sledge on the historical churches of Mobile which we’ll view later in the week.
Joyce Dickey continued with the “Three Davids.” She reviewed the Early + High Renaissance + compared the Greeks (wet drapery) with the Romans (arch – Pantheon – double dome, etc.) Donatello drapes around free leg – see vein. She brought out the negative disposition of Michelangelo + his homo tendencies. He lived a long + fruitful life + his last works are seen on the dome of the Sistine chapel in Rome. Her description of Donatello depicts the slender body of David as seen in St. George (the shield) + pretty effeminate look suggesting homosexuality. She talked about Rafael + how normal he was. Great with curves.
The Bald Eagles talk by Roger Clay was excellent. Dinner at Yardarm on the pier – fun.

Joyce Dickey continued with her amusing informative talk on art from Renaissance to the 17th C today, touching on Titian + reviewing the other Davids.
Bernini – 1599-1680 depicts Southern Baroque – irregularity in art rather than linear perspective seen during the Renaissance. He was a sculptor + architect first + painter last. He worked in Rome + at St Peters you see his “opera in art.”
After lunch we had a talk on the Beauty + Beasts of aquatic plants.
Dinner was at Julwin’s in Fairhope + a lecture in p.m. at Dahlgren Hall by John Sledge on the churches which we’ll see tomorrow.

The Law Enforcement Office Kevin, from the State Dept of Conservation of Game + Fish showed us slides before lunch.
Then we were off by bus for a tour of churches in Mobile, first to the Visitation Convent. We ate a delicious lunch there after viewing the beautiful French building. We made some purchases in the gift shop. Then left for the Govt. St. Presby. Church – truly beautiful. The Christ Episcopal was our last stop + there we saw the Tiffany windows for which it is famous.
Dinner was catered at Dahlgren Hall, then “graduation” at the Marietta Johnson Museum on campus.
Leaving for Pensacola after classes tomorrow.

Pensacola I (1990)
In Aug. 1990, we moved from Rocky River, and made our permanent residence at XXXX Summer Lakes Lane in Pensacola, Fl. Since we’d sold our home + had to vacate early, we had the moving van on our tail all the way to Fla. Since we didn’t yet have a house to move into, it was a mad rush house hunting in Pensacola. We arrived in town in late Aug. in 95 degree heat. First stop, the bank where we discovered our $45,000 check from one of our funds "bounced" - no second signature – mine - so we were delayed. Our realtor showed us several listings, but nothing appropriate, but on Sat. Eureka, our Summer Lakes house was the winning ticket! We bought the house on Sat., moved in ahead of the movers who arrived in soaring temperature on Tues.

Beautiful, sunny day, temp. in 50’s – 60’s.
Had picnic lunch in Cincy.
Drove routes I 71-270-75-Ky Turnpike.
Louisville looks prosperous and growing.
Arrived at Bel-Air late afternoon after 9-1/2 hr. drive – 550 miles.
Watched a little TV - ate wonderful buffet dinner at the beautiful lodge at Ky. Dam. Gas $20 – Dinner $18 - Gift Bob + Gen $8.

Lots of cotton in Ark. as well as the bumpiest roads so far. Lovely bright sunny day – temp. in 70’s – 80’s. Delicious Mexican dinner w Margaritas at Francisco’s at the hotel.

Beautiful drive to San Antonio through growing, modern cities: Waco, Austin + San Antonio. Hearty breakfast at the Thunderbird - $7.71 between Greenville + Waco. Arrived at Bob + Gen’s around 2:30 after 6-1/2 hrs. Dinner at LaFiesta near Randolph Field then toured the base. Dinner $14.73.

In the afternoon we picked up “Doc” E at the Emily Morgan Hotel + drove out to Randolph Air Force Base. While the guys checked Personnel Records, Gen + I shopped in the BX. Spent $55 on Christmas stocking stuffers for the little guys plus a few incidentals for myself. Had dinner at the Olive Garden $22 – then back to Bob + Gen’s. Linda + Michael were over for the evening. Fun day!
10/12/89
Toured Air Force Village I after breakfast. Eve B + Norma N are both residents + former W/P friends. The “home” is very comfortable + we had an enjoyable lunch “on the house” in the dining room. We checked in at the Emily Morgan Hotel for the reunion around 3 pm. Our small room, overlooking the parking lot, was exchanged for an elegant “executive suite” 15 min. later. The cocktail party + buffet on the 12th floor was very relaxing + informal. Good seeing everyone again.

While Bert attended the parade at Lackland AFB, I joined the ladies for a tour of the missions: Espada, San Juan, Concepcion, and the large one presently being used: San Jose. Lunch on the river boats was a combination of Mexican food + margaritas. We walked thru the air conditioned stores: Foleys, Dillards + many of the specialty shops along the Riverwalk. Stopped in at the Alamo for a quick look. Dinner at the Olive Garden (25.00), then back to the Emily Morgan to watch TV.

Breakfast at Wendy’s, then out to Air Force Village II. Very lovely retirement home, especially the cottages. Met the girls at 1:00 + Bert drove us out to look at cotton, “beaded” dresses. Too expensive and goddy. Had cocktail dinner party in p.m. + bid our adieus to the group. Lovely reunion. Lunch + dinner 9.00.

We checked out of the hotel around 11 am + went out to Bob + Gen’s. We went to Wyatt’s Cafeteria in the mall for lunch, did some laundry afterwards + then our farewells before leaving for Mo Ranch. It was about a 90 mile drive into the hill country, past Kerrville. After dinner, we had introductions + then played games. We’re staying in Flato Lodge just next to Wynn with Grace room in between. Nice quiet area – no radio, TV or newspapers. Kinda spooky!

What a wonderful day! Our classes began + both instructors, Francis Hayward + Leonard Halloway, were very interesting teacher the Apostle Paul + The Art of Conversation. No classes in the afternoon. Instead we drove over to Fredericksburg with the group by van to see the quaint German village and Admiral Chester Nimitz’s Museum. Dinner after the museum trip was down the street at Fenner + Bean’s where we had delicious burgers, fries, iced tea + ice cream. Wally Rogers was our guest entertainer who played + sang a variety of country songs on his guitar. Our homework was reading the book of Acts to be prepared for class tomorrow.

Classes in the a.m. lunch, then an introduction to Spanish followed by a walking tour of the grounds. We made it back to Flato in time for a quick change before Mexican bingo + popcorn/apple juice refreshments. Bert won $1.00 to be spent in the Cantina.

Classes in the a.m. continue to be interesting. After Spanish class I sacked out for a nice long nap. Bert and a small group went on a bird walk on the grounds, but it was too cold + windy to see many birds. We joined Nancy + Bill P and our program director, Bill G, to plan “graduation.” We had a bird slide show in the p.m.

Left after lunch for Beaumont Inn Best Western. Had dinner in the room (15.00) + got caught up on the news via TV. En route we saw wild turkeys + deer in the “hill country,” then oil refineries + chem plants as we neared Houston. We drove 375 mi in 6-1/2 hrs. Motel 38.60.

Beautiful, sunny day, temp. in 50’s – 60’s.
Had picnic lunch in Cincy.
Drove routes I 71-270-75-Ky Turnpike.
Louisville looks prosperous and growing.
Arrived at Bel-Air late afternoon after 9-1/2 hr. drive – 550 miles.
Watched a little TV - ate wonderful buffet dinner at the beautiful lodge at Ky. Dam. Gas $20 – Dinner $18 - Gift Bob + Gen $8.

Beautiful drive to San Antonio through growing, modern cities: Waco, Austin + San Antonio. Hearty breakfast at the Thunderbird - $7.71 between Greenville + Waco. Arrived at Bob + Gen’s around 2:30 after 6-1/2 hrs. Dinner at LaFiesta near Randolph Field then toured the base. Dinner $14.73.

In the afternoon we picked up “Doc” E at the Emily Morgan Hotel + drove out to Randolph Air Force Base. While the guys checked Personnel Records, Gen + I shopped in the BX. Spent $55 on Christmas stocking stuffers for the little guys plus a few incidentals for myself. Had dinner at the Olive Garden $22 – then back to Bob + Gen’s. Linda + Michael were over for the evening. Fun day!

Toured Air Force Village I after breakfast. Eve B + Norma N are both residents + former W/P friends. The “home” is very comfortable + we had an enjoyable lunch “on the house” in the dining room. We checked in at the Emily Morgan Hotel for the reunion around 3 pm. Our small room, overlooking the parking lot, was exchanged for an elegant “executive suite” 15 min. later. The cocktail party + buffet on the 12th floor was very relaxing + informal. Good seeing everyone again.
