Nov. 17, 1991 Pensacola – Point Clear, Ala.
Checked into the Grand Hotel at 3:30. Registered with Faulkner State College + got room assignment – lovely room overlooking small lake at North Bay House. Introductions were made at the Jubilee Room + then we boarded the bus for dinner at the Nautilus in Spanish Fort, about 10 mi. north of Fairhope. The shrimp creole + house salad were good + the conversation around our table with Sam + Helen B from Baton Rouge was fun – lots of war stories. Watched Browns/Oilers game on TV.
Nov. 18, ‘91
After breakfast we boarded the bus for Dahlgren Hall in Fairhope where we studied about Aquatic Resource Management with Bill Tucker of Dept of Nat. Resources. John Sledge gave us a short course in Historic Churches. After lunch Joyce Dickey began her lecture + slide presentation of Three Davids beginning with Donatello + the early Renaissance of 15th C.
16th C – Michelangelo – high classical
17th C. – Baroque
Florence – Renaissance
Greeks – Human body – Idealized
Contropposto – Polyclidus – weight shift
Egyptian – Clothed
Romans grabbed everything.
She was a delightful instructor.
In the evening we had dinner at the Cock of the Walk at Spanish Fort. Had catfish – good.
Two lectures in PM on Catholic + Protestant religions.
Nov. 19 ‘91
After breakfast we boarded the bus for the campus.
We had a slide presentation + talk by John Sledge on the historical churches of Mobile which we’ll view later in the week.
Joyce Dickey continued with the “Three Davids.” She reviewed the Early + High Renaissance + compared the Greeks (wet drapery) with the Romans (arch – Pantheon – double dome, etc.) Donatello drapes around free leg – see vein. She brought out the negative disposition of Michelangelo + his homo tendencies. He lived a long + fruitful life + his last works are seen on the dome of the Sistine chapel in Rome. Her description of Donatello depicts the slender body of David as seen in St. George (the shield) + pretty effeminate look suggesting homosexuality. She talked about Rafael + how normal he was. Great with curves.
The Bald Eagles talk by Roger Clay was excellent. Dinner at Yardarm on the pier – fun.
Nov. 20 ‘91
Joyce Dickey continued with her amusing informative talk on art from Renaissance to the 17th C today, touching on Titian + reviewing the other Davids.
Bernini – 1599-1680 depicts Southern Baroque – irregularity in art rather than linear perspective seen during the Renaissance. He was a sculptor + architect first + painter last. He worked in Rome + at St Peters you see his “opera in art.”
After lunch we had a talk on the Beauty + Beasts of aquatic plants.
Dinner was at Julwin’s in Fairhope + a lecture in p.m. at Dahlgren Hall by John Sledge on the churches which we’ll see tomorrow.
11/21/91
We reviewed the three Davids in a.m. Then we discussed 17C Baroque Spain – Velasquez – Prado
North – Rubens (RomanCath.)
Rembrandt (Prot.)
The Law Enforcement Office Kevin, from the State Dept of Conservation of Game + Fish showed us slides before lunch.
Then we were off by bus for a tour of churches in Mobile, first to the Visitation Convent. We ate a delicious lunch there after viewing the beautiful French building. We made some purchases in the gift shop. Then left for the Govt. St. Presby. Church – truly beautiful. The Christ Episcopal was our last stop + there we saw the Tiffany windows for which it is famous.
Dinner was catered at Dahlgren Hall, then “graduation” at the Marietta Johnson Museum on campus.
Leaving for Pensacola after classes tomorrow.

Pensacola I (1990)
In Aug. 1990, we moved from Rocky River, and made our permanent residence at XXXX Summer Lakes Lane in Pensacola, Fl. Since we’d sold our home + had to vacate early, we had the moving van on our tail all the way to Fla. Since we didn’t yet have a house to move into, it was a mad rush house hunting in Pensacola. We arrived in town in late Aug. in 95 degree heat. First stop, the bank where we discovered our $45,000 check from one of our funds "bounced" - no second signature – mine - so we were delayed. Our realtor showed us several listings, but nothing appropriate, but on Sat. Eureka, our Summer Lakes house was the winning ticket! We bought the house on Sat., moved in ahead of the movers who arrived in soaring temperature on Tues.

Beautiful, sunny day, temp. in 50’s – 60’s.
Had picnic lunch in Cincy.
Drove routes I 71-270-75-Ky Turnpike.
Louisville looks prosperous and growing.
Arrived at Bel-Air late afternoon after 9-1/2 hr. drive – 550 miles.
Watched a little TV - ate wonderful buffet dinner at the beautiful lodge at Ky. Dam. Gas $20 – Dinner $18 - Gift Bob + Gen $8.

Lunch $2.88 Mileage 1147.3 – 11 hr. drive 600 miles
Lots of cotton in Ark. as well as the bumpiest roads so far. Lovely bright sunny day – temp. in 70’s – 80’s. Delicious Mexican dinner w Margaritas at Francisco’s at the hotel.

Beautiful drive to San Antonio through growing, modern cities: Waco, Austin + San Antonio. Hearty breakfast at the Thunderbird - $7.71 between Greenville + Waco. Arrived at Bob + Gen’s around 2:30 after 6-1/2 hrs. Dinner at LaFiesta near Randolph Field then toured the base. Dinner $14.73.

In the afternoon we picked up “Doc” E at the Emily Morgan Hotel + drove out to Randolph Air Force Base. While the guys checked Personnel Records, Gen + I shopped in the BX. Spent $55 on Christmas stocking stuffers for the little guys plus a few incidentals for myself. Had dinner at the Olive Garden $22 – then back to Bob + Gen’s. Linda + Michael were over for the evening. Fun day!

Toured Air Force Village I after breakfast. Eve B + Norma N are both residents + former W/P friends. The “home” is very comfortable + we had an enjoyable lunch “on the house” in the dining room. We checked in at the Emily Morgan Hotel for the reunion around 3 pm. Our small room, overlooking the parking lot, was exchanged for an elegant “executive suite” 15 min. later. The cocktail party + buffet on the 12th floor was very relaxing + informal. Good seeing everyone again.

Had breakfast in the room. While Bert attended the parade at Lackland AFB, I joined the ladies for a tour of the missions: Espada, San Juan, Concepcion, and the large one presently being used: San Jose. Lunch on the river boats was a combination of Mexican food + margaritas. We walked thru the air conditioned stores: Foleys, Dillards + many of the specialty shops along the Riverwalk. Stopped in at the Alamo for a quick look. Dinner at the Olive Garden (25.00), then back to the Emily Morgan to watch TV.

Breakfast at Wendy’s, then out to Air Force Village II. Very lovely retirement home, especially the cottages. Met the girls at 1:00 + Bert drove us out to look at cotton, “beaded” dresses. Too expensive and goddy. Had cocktail dinner party in p.m. + bid our adieus to the group. Lovely reunion. Lunch + dinner 9.00.

We checked out of the hotel around 11 am + went out to Bob + Gen’s. We went to Wyatt’s Cafeteria in the mall for lunch, did some laundry afterwards + then our farewells before leaving for Mo Ranch. It was about a 90 mile drive into the hill country, past Kerrville. After dinner, we had introductions + then played games. We’re staying in Flato Lodge just next to Wynn with Grace room in between. Nice quiet area – no radio, TV or newspapers. Kinda spooky!

What a wonderful day! Our classes began + both instructors, Francis Hayward + Leonard Halloway, were very interesting teacher the Apostle Paul + The Art of Conversation. No classes in the afternoon. Instead we drove over to Fredericksburg with the group by van to see the quaint German village and Admiral Chester Nimitz’s Museum. Dinner after the museum trip was down the street at Fenner + Bean’s where we had delicious burgers, fries, iced tea + ice cream. Wally Rogers was our guest entertainer who played + sang a variety of country songs on his guitar. Our homework was reading the book of Acts to be prepared for class tomorrow.

Classes in the a.m. lunch, then an introduction to Spanish followed by a walking tour of the grounds. We made it back to Flato in time for a quick change before Mexican bingo + popcorn/apple juice refreshments. Bert won $1.00 to be spent in the Cantina.

Classes in the a.m. continue to be interesting. After Spanish class I sacked out for a nice long nap. Bert and a small group went on a bird walk on the grounds, but it was too cold + windy to see many birds. We joined Nancy + Bill P and our program director, Bill G, to plan “graduation.” We had a bird slide show in the p.m.

Left after lunch for Beaumont Inn Best Western. Had dinner in the room (15.00) + got caught up on the news via TV. En route we saw wild turkeys + deer in the “hill country,” then oil refineries + chem plants as we neared Houston. We drove 375 mi in 6-1/2 hrs. Motel 38.60.

Rocky River VIII (1989)
In June 1989, we attended an Elderhostel at Incarnation Camp in Ivoryton, Conn. with sessions as varied as the oceanography of Long Island Sound + geology of Connecticut, Victorian music, minstrel music before, during + after the Civil War, etc.
In October of the same year, we had a 8th Combat Cargo Group [Squadron] Reunion, which we combined with an Elderhostel at Mo-Ranch in Texas.

Elderhostel at The Mountain Retreat, Highlands, NC (1988)

Highlands, N. Car.
We drove 480 miles today on I-77 to Statesville, N. Car. where we spent the night at a comfortable EconoLodge for a most affordable price - $29.00.
5/22/88
Left Statesville early in a.m. for Highlands, stopping in Asheville for a little sightseeing. The Cultural Arts + Crafts Bldg was quite interesting. Then we toured the U. of N. Car. Botanical Gardens which were lovely. We were impressed with the acreage + variety + number of plants.
Our drive to the Mountain was lengthier than we thought, but we arrived in time to register + get ready for social hour at the lodge before dinner in the dining hall. We met many interesting people from all parts of the country. It’s a Unitarian/Universalist Retreat Center. Had a delicious dinner on red/white checkered cloths - 8 to a table after a social hour at the lodge. We had a slide presentation of the Mountain after dinner + then settled in Cabin 8-A for a comfortable night’s rest.

After breakfast the day began with an informative talk by George Brosi on Southern Appalachian Literature. It was followed by a study on Wellness Lifestyle + led by Dee Evers, a very capable + personable R.N. We discussed the wholistic approach + if we adhere to all the good health rules; we could easily live to be 100!
Our afternoon’s discussion on bird watching was led by the able Dr. Frank McCamey who showed us slides of the various native birds of the region. Then we boarded Fred, our bus, + drove down the mountain to the Highlands Botanical Gardens. This was a great birdwatching location, and with his help, we were able to see many plants, + wildflowers, as well as birds. Anne Heath, the naturalist, gave an excellent talk + slide presentation after dinner. Quite a day!

It was another interesting session on Southern Appalachian Literature, names like: Harriet Arrow, Mary Lee Settle, James Still and Jesse Stuart to name a few.
Instead of Wellness Lifestyle this a.m. Dottie Pollack + I dodged the raindrops in + out of the shops in Highlands. There was such a downpour that our afternoon field trip was cancelled + we had a lengthy but interesting session on bird watching – the use of binoculars included. After social hr in the lodge + dinner we watched a tape + slides of birds given by Frank McCamey of Atlanta.

This was a fun day! We met on the deck of the lodge at 6:45 a.m. for a bird walk + saw: Carolina chickadees, red-eyed vireo, great crested flycatcher, junkoes, + catbird. It was quite windy or we would’ve seen more. George Brosi + Dee Evers both led stimulating discussions on Literature + Wellness. After lunch we had more bird watching, then an interesting field trip to bridal veil falls + Dry Falls. You can walk under the latter one without getting wet. Marilyn McMinn McCredie’s folklore + songs were the best entertainment yet!

Gorgeous day. We had our usual a.m. session with George + Dee. After lunch we had a field trip to Sam Pickleheim’s farm. This gentleman, along with other early settlers, left their farms for a more productive livelihood in the cotton mills in 1912-1917. Now our government has sold part of the trees to private companies for the lumber, mainly the huge white pines. Indians lived in the caves 10,000 yr. ago. We took pictures for Mike of the rock formation.
After social hour on the deck, we had a delicious turkey dinner, followed by graduation + a movie “Foxfire.”

While Bert packed the van, I packed our lunches in the dining hall, and we bid “adieu” to our friends before departing for Asheville. We arrived at the gorgeous Biltmore Estate about noon, toured the garden, + had lunch on the lawn. Approximately two hours later, we completed our tour on the mansion, which had taken 1,000 men five years to complete, and were on our way to the winery. Never have we seen such a collection of European tapestries, China, Oriental rugs, etc displayed so tastefully as in this estate, not to mention the garden filled with a variety of flowers, plants, shrubs + trees!!

One year later in 1989, Brynne was born on April 14th and Donna + I shared our April birthdays with her.
Other happy events during the late Eighties included Erich’s + Kyle's visits with us in Rocky River + Marco Island. Fun times were ours when Jean + Milt L shared their pool on Tonawanda [Drive] with our guys with their grandsons. We drove to Danville, Pa. where we met Kent + Tamiko half-way from R.I. for the exchange. What fun was in store when they arrived in R.R., not just with the Ls, but our annual trips to that great amusement park, Cedar Point. "What fun until we got home about 11 p.m. + Grandma made us get showers before going to bed!"
More fun was in store for us at Marco Island when we made our annual visits during ski week. Other grandkids of Marco friends came during ski week + we had our own club house meetings. Too bad our cousin Ryan couldn’t come from Colo. at the same time.
In addition to our entertaining grandchildren in Rocky River and Marco Island in the late 80’s + early 90’s, Bert + I decided to check out various Elderhostels in different part of the country. One of our favorites was at the Highlands in No. Car. + another one was Gettysburg, Pa. We did eleven in all before retirement at Azalea Trace, and you can read about them in our folders in the lower drawer of my filing cabinet + also in my green diary.
