10/3/98 Pensacola – Little Rock
Left home about 8:30 am + arrived at the LaQuinta South about 6:00 pm. It was a pleasant drive with showers from Jackson – Vicksburg. Our routes were: I-10 to Mobile, then Rt. 98 to Hattiesburg + 49 to Jackson where we stopped at a Wendy’s for lunch. All through La. there were fields of cotton + acres of pecans. In Ark. we stopped at the beautiful Tourist Information Center which is located on Lake Chicote in Lake Village. It was a 2-1/2 drive from there to Little Rock + although we adhered to the 55 mph speed limit most of the way, it was scenic – small towns + lots of agriculture. Why be in a hurry! From Pine Bluff to Little Rock we picked up speed because of a divided highway. Dinner was very good at a nearby Denny’s. We got back in time to watch the Cubs-Braves game. Score: 6-2 Braves

10/4/98 Little Rock – Branson
The day began at 7:30 with breakfast at the motel, then departed around 9 o’clock. Had lunch just south of Branson at a Dairy Queen for a delicious barbecue + split a small blizzard. Flea markets + yard sales with wet clothes hanging on the line were everywhere. The Ozark National Forest with all the rolling, winding hills was impressive. When we arrived at the Best Western Music Capital Inn, our tickets we’d ordered for the shows were here + that was a pleasant sight as we’d ordered them before we left home + weren’t sure they’d be delivered. The indoor pool, sauna + whirlpool were very clean + we were practically the only ones using them. Dinner was at BT Bones – country theme with guitarist. The Bobby Vinton show was spectacular + we’re looking forward to the others Mon. + Tues.
Mileage 690. Drove 185 miles.
10/5/98 Branson
Even though it was raining cats + dogs, it didn’t dampen our spirits.
We had a nice healthy breakfast in the lounge, then a swim in the indoor pool.
After lunch we rode around town before catching the afternoon show. Dino Kartsonakis, a concert pianist gave a spectacular performance. The use of 22 marvelous dancers in addition to all the fabulous props made for an excellent show.
After a quick supper at Starvin Marvin’s we dodged the rain puddles for the Andy Williams show. What a guy. He’s #10 in our book! Wonderful show!
The buildings where these two shows were held – the Grand Palace + Andy Williams are very impressive. The Palace has 4,000 seats – wow!!
10/6/98 Branson
Today we had a nice swim + exercise in the pool, then went out to the Outlet Mall for a walk around the 90 stores. The performances were at 3:00 + 8:00. Country Tonite was colorful + fun – lots of activity – dancing + fiddle playing in addition to some mean cowboy guitarists.
Wendy’s was the fare for the meal this evening as we were short on time + besides we’d eaten a large meal at noon at the Cracker Barrel.
Jim Stafford was more than we expected for tonight’s show – was great – lots of laughs – a real comedian. He included his 5 yr old son + introduced his wife + 2 yr old daughter. We used glasses + had fun catching all the floating objects as they floated through the room. The theatre, although pretty, had smaller, lower seats + we were a little cramped for space.
10/7/98 Branson – Vicksburg
Left on a crispy 45 degree morning around 8 am. Pleasant drive through the Ozarks winding roads + although we didn’t make good time due to construction, we enjoyed the ride – very relaxing.
As we approached Eurdora + the Welcome Center, we thought we were continuing on Rt. 65 but we missed a turn so took an alternate route on 61 E, then turned south + continued on this well paved one lane highway making good time + maintaining 65 mph. About 30 mi. north of Vicksburg Bert dozed off + I continued driving, looking forward to getting into Vicksburg around 5 pm. About that time I hit an obstruction in the road which tore a hole in the gas tank + transmission. Big trouble. A good Samaritan, Terrell P, a sales rep for Abbott Lab. let us use his phone to call AAA + he brought me to Rainbow Casino motel + Bert arrived an hr. later in the wrecker. What a night. We await the outcome!
10/8/98 Vicksburg – Pensacola
We spent a restless night awaiting the outcome of damage to the van. We agonized over the possibilities on getting home. Bert accompanied the van + wrecker to the garage where a wonderful mechanic put it back together + we were on the road about 3:30. How lucky we were. God really had a hand in this voyage!
It was a pleasant drive through this part of Miss. from Vicksburg – Jackson – Hattiesburg on to Mobile where we stopped for a quick meal at Wendy’s.
The drive from Mobile to Pensacola took a little over an hour, not too much traffic. We arrived home about 9:00 pm, so grateful for a wonderful vacation except for the Vicksburg mishap. It was 300 miles today from Vicksburg.

Western Mediterranean Countries (1998)

April 18, 1998 Pensacola – N.Y. – Athens, Greece
We boarded the plane at 6:50 with a ride to the airport with Shirley + Dick L. We had to deplane for a fuel problem but were airborn at 7:50 on Delta to Atlanta. We boarded another Delta plane at 10:20 + arrived at JFK at 12:30. Had an interesting lady to chat with enroute, Dora S from Jax. + the time passed quickly. We caught a bus to the International terminal + our dear grandson, Kyle, was here to surprise and greet us. We had lunch together, then he had to go back to NYU + his job. We passed the time reading + people watching after getting our seat assignments on the plane. Our departure time on Olympic Airlines is scheduled for 7 pm.
After a 2-hour delay and rough start on Delta to pick up more passengers in Boston. Full plane – 747 + about 500 people on board. Dinner was very good + served about 10:30 pm. Then lights were out + I slept sporadicly, but had to work at it with the help of PM Tylenol.
I’m grateful we’re having a good flight.
April 19, 1998 Athens – Divani Hotel
Breakfast was served about 10:30, in time to get ready to land the aircraft at 12:30. It took an hour to go through customs, get our bags + board a bus for the Divani Caravel Hotel. We checked into the hotel, got our room assignment + then signed up for a tour tomorrow before going to the pier to board Aegean I.
I'm impressed with all the marble that is used extensively in this hotel, throughout our room, in the bathroom, lobby + all the decorations at the Divani Hotel. I’m also pleased with the restaurant, the tile bath + the service.
We had dinner here and it was yummy. Retired early.
April 20, 1998 Athens - Pireaus, Greece
Our tour this am was to the Acropolis which is 512 ft flat-top limestone hill around which the city was built. The Parthenon is a very skillfully crafted bldg. + is dedicated to the goddess, Athena. It embodies the Greek ideal of freedom: spiritual, intellectual and political.
After quite a hike up to these sites over marble + sandstone, it was quite a treat to ride the bus back to the hotel. We saw the various places of interest along our route: the Erechtheion Temple, 6 lovely maidens, Athena Nike Temple, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier + a stop at the Olympic Stadium built in 1896.
In the afternoon we arrived at our ship in Pireaus + got unpacked. It looks like an interesting + fun cruise. The Aegean I is not the most luxurious ship, but it’s be O.K.

4/21/98 Pireaus – Heraklion, Greece (Crete)
We had the morning free + after lunch, we joined four busloads of people + went on a panoramic ride to Agios Nikolaos, the most popular resort in Crete. We traveled along the north coast where tiny towns could be seen clinging to the hillside which was covered with millions of olive trees. The water was a gorgeous cobalt blue + the shoreline of Crete is 167 miles in length. Many Europeans come during the summer months to vacation. We saw the quaint monastery of St. George Seliniris where baptisms + weddings are held. On one of the islands – Spinalage – we saw from a distance a 13th Century castle where lepers were sent. We stopped at St. Tropez where there are quaint shops + had a coke at an open-air restaurant before boarding the bus to come back to the ship. Had a quick nap before dinner.
4/22/98 At sea Crete – Israel
A gorgeous day! After a very restful sleep, we had a light breakfast in the Lido Lounge, then a walk on the sun deck after our orientation on Cyprus + Rhodes which follows the Israel tour. I tested the swimming pool on the sun deck + it was mighty refreshing – cold in other words. I was the only brave soul in the water. We caught some welcome rays, then read + rested in our cabin #251 the rest of the afternoon.

April 23, 1998 Ashdod, Israel
We arrived in Ashdod at 7 am for what looks like an interesting tour of Massada + the Dead Sea.
Things I’ll always remember from this tour: 1) The feeling of the salt on my hands as I dipped them in the water + the beautiful Radisson Mariah where we had lunch. 2) The cable car ride up to the mtn fort at *Massada + then the 80 steps we climbed for a spectacular view of the Dead Sea. 3) Miles + miles of desert + arid rock as we came to the Qumran Caves where in 1947 a Bedouin boy discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest known Biblical manuscripts in the world. 4) The Massada was built by Herod the Great + where 950 Jewish Zealots – men, women + children held off 10,000 Roman soldiers for over a year, then committed suicide rather than surrender. There we saw Herod’s 3 tiered palace, the baths, the synagogue, the defending walls + the water cisterns. Quite a 10 hr. trip!!
April 24, 1998: Ashdod, Israel
Today we’ll be doing Jerusalem + Bethlehem + it looks to be a full day. It was!!
Things I’ll remember about today’s tour: Bethlehem: Manger Square + the Church of the Nativity where we saw the spot where Jesus is supposed to have been born. A silver star is in the Grotto + some Catholics knelt down + kissed it.
This church was built in the 14th C by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine + his mother Helen. The entrance is low to protect it from Moslem neighbors. The seat of the government, the Knesset, the Shrine of the Book which houses the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Old City, the Wailing Wall, Via Dolorosa (believed to have been the route Jesus took when he carried the cross), + the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are all in Jerusalem.
Rachel's Tomb, guarded by Israeli soldiers was unusual. She’s the only matriarch buried in Bethlehem. The rest (Leah, Sara + Rebecca) are buried in Jerusalem.
We enjoyed lunch at the beautiful Seven Arches near the Mount of Olives for s spectacular view of Jerusalem.
In Bethlehem we stopped at the Manger Square gift shop + bought a few souvenirs, but other than the Church of the Nativity + Shepherd’s Field, there wasn’t much to see.
Most of the activity today took place in Jerusalem, a city f 600,000 Jews + 100,000 Arabs. They were celebrating 50 years of Independence + large flags with the Star of David were flying throughout the city.
Homes are built on terraces + are very expensive. I loved the flowers that pervade throughout the city + irrigation plays a great part in growth of many crops + flowers.
A truly beautiful tour today.
4/25/98 Haifa, Israel
We started the day touring the city of Haifa + the Mt. Carmel area. There we took a picture of the B’hai golden dome + the beautiful gardens as this is the seat of their religion. Other places we visited include the Jordan River where I bought some souvenirs + a bottle of water from the Jordan R. where Jesus was baptized.
Then we took a boat ride on a replica of an ancient boat + a ride to Tiberius on the sea that Jesus walked on. This site was named after the Roman Emperor Tiberius. We had a delicious lunch at the Carmel Jordan River Hotel on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. We drove through Cana where Jesus turned the water into wine + past Tabgha where He multiplied the loaves + fishes to feed the crowd of 5,000. We passed the Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus preached the “Sermon on the Mount” + on to Capernaum where He did most of His ministry on the Sea of Galilee.
We saw the ruins of an ancient synagogue with it’s recently discovered mosaic floor.
The last part of our journey today was spent in Nazareth + this is where Jesus spent the hidden years of his childhood. The Basilica of the Annunciation is one of the most revered shrines + the largest church in the Middle East. This was built on the site where the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary she would be the mother of the Messiah. Mosaics from a number of different countries are the windows of the church on the second floor. The Church of Joseph next was built over chambers that housed his carpentry shop. On the way back to Haifa we viewed Mount Tabor, the site of the Transfiguration where Jesus appeared to his disciples [as a figure infused with light].
Our last stop of the day was at a diamond factory. This was a full day!
4/26/98 (At sea) Enroute to Limassol, Cyprus
This a.m. we slept in, took a walk around on the sun deck, had some breakfast on the Lido deck, then went ashore via bus.
Walked around the downtown area, bought a few postcards where everything was one for a dollar, two for a dollar, three for a dollar, etc. Came back, had lunch in the main dining room + met some folks from Pensacola + Nevarie, the As, Marge + Jimmy + Cs. Made reservations for a tour in Istanbul when we arrive there Thurs. Now we are sailing toward Rhodes + the sea is rather choppy. Tonight we are having Greek night + we’re dressing in the traditional colors – blue + white. Plans for tonight were changed. The sea is very rough. One by one or two by two people vacated the main lounge during orientation on upcoming shore excursions. We’re not sick but went to bed because of rough sea + cancelled our plans to go to dinner.
4/27/98 Rhodes, Greece
After a rough night at sea, we came ashore about 10 am. We relaxed on the sundeck, then had lunch + departed for the afternoon tour of Lindos.
The location of beautiful Lindos on the Aegean Sea has a climate similar to that of Calif. The water is a glistening turquoise + the view from high atop the ancient Acropolis is truly spectacular. It was worth the 275 steps we had to climb to reach it. The small harbor below is said to have been where St. Paul landed in 58 A.D. We observed the remains of the Temple of Athens. I took a picture of the colonades which reach toward the heavens.
We ascended it + it was a piece of cake coming down the steps. We bought a few souvenirs, viewed the interior of a Greek Orthodox Church, stopped at a pottery store + returned to our ship for an 8:30 sailing.
*This is my favorite place in Greece - clean streets, shops, + beautiful homes.
4/28/98 Kusadasi, Turkey
This was a day to remember. Kusadasi is an island paradise – heavily populated in the summer with vacationers. Impressive flowers abound. About 20-minute drive to Ephesus is the highlight of this tour for there we were able to see the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, the original burial site of John the apostle. We saw extensive Greek + Roman ruins – temples, porticos, fountains + mosaics. We walked along an ancient marble road paved with thick marble slabs from the 5th C. A.D.
We took pictures of the Great Theatre where St. Paul preached. There were 24,000 seats + you could hear for quite a distance. We saw St. John’s (the apostle) tomb + took a picture of it. We stopped for a carpet demonstration + took a picture of the girl at the loom. After a barbecue lunch on the sun deck, we walked to the adjacent castle + took a picture of Ada (castle) restaurant.

4/29/98 Mitilini, Greece
This was a day of rest for we are packing and disembarking for Istanbul tomorrow.
We landed at Lesbos about 7 am. We claimed this day as a day of rest as there is not too much to see on the island other than temples, churches, etc. + we’ve already seen similar works of art. Tomorrow we’ll disembark, have a short day in Istanbul, then prepare for our trip home. We walked along the waterfront + visited the Church of St. Therapon + the nearby Cathedral. The shops included fresh fish, deer with the eyeballs staring at us, many linen + china shops, etc. After lunch we began our packing, then went up on the sundeck + read. At 4:00 pm we had our final briefing on our debarking for Istanbul tomorrow. Dinner was followed by a talent show in the main lounge with passenger participation – what fun! We sailed at 3 pm + had a smooth sail all night. A great cruise.
4/30/98 Istanbul, Turkey
We disembarked at 9 am + went on a tour of Istanbul which included the following: 1) the Blue Mosque, the city's most famous landmark.
It has 6 spear-shaped minerets. The vast vaulted interior is a heavenly blue mosaic of inlaid Iznik tiles. It was created by Sultan Ahmet in 1619 to surpass the beauty of the Christian Santa Sophia. This church, known as the Hagia Sophia, was constructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th C + was the most important church until it was conquered by Mehmet in 1453.
2) The Topkapi Saray (Palace) was a sight to behold with its interconnecting apartments, halls, gardens + courtyards. We entered the ceremonial gate + saw at the treasury bldg an 84 carat diamond + 8 pound emeralds.
3) The Grand Bazaar had 3000 shops + stalls where we spent several hours browsing.
4) Our beautiful Conrad International Hotel lived up to its 5*rating + was a welcome site after a tiresome day. We checked in about 4 pm., unpacked what we needed for tomorrow, then met John + Chung S for a cab drive to the Hanedan Restaurant (Fish House). This was a lovely setting overlooking the Bosphorus + a great way to spend the last evening of the tour before returning to the States. Our cab drive back to the hotel was scary as our driver proceeded to cut through congested, narrow streets + even attempted to cut into a one-way street going the wrong way and we barely made it! We spent over 3,000,000 TL (Turkish lira) for dinner – about $55! We retired early for our wake-up call tomorrow.
5/1/98 Istanbul – Frankfurt – N.Y. –Atlanta – Pensacola
We arose at 2:15 am for a bus departure at 3:15 am. We arrived at the airport at 3:45 + stood in a long line for over an hour – very frustrating!! We wanted our luggage tagged for Pensacola but were advised to ship to N.Y. as it was a better place to claim the luggage. Our luggage was tagged for New York + we were off to Frankfurt, where we had another hour's wait, + then we were seated across two aisles from each other for our 7-1/2 hr flight to N.Y. However I was seated next to a nice couple, Sheryl + Tom B + Bert had an aisle seat. Had a comfortable flight + Lufthansa treated us very well with delicious food, so the flight was over quickly with intermittent cat naps + good service. At N.Y. we claimed our luggage at JFK + waited several hours for our Delta flight to Atlanta. Naturally we were anxious to get home, but with a full plane there were several delays, but we were met by our dear friends, Shirley + Dick L + claimed our luggage grateful to be home safely after a wonderful trip!

4/28/98 Kusadasi, Turkey
This was a day to remember. Kusadasi is an island paradise – heavily populated in the summer with vacationers. Impressive flowers abound. About 20-minute drive to Ephesus is the highlight of this tour for there we were able to see the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, the original burial site of John the apostle. We saw extensive Greek + Roman ruins – temples, porticos, fountains + mosaics. We walked along an ancient marble road paved with thick marble slabs from the 5th C. A.D.

4/29/98 Mitilini, Greece
This was a day of rest for we are packing and disembarking for Istanbul tomorrow.
We landed at Lesbos about 7 am. We claimed this day as a day of rest as there is not too much to see on the island other than temples, churches, etc. + we’ve already seen similar works of art. Tomorrow we’ll disembark, have a short day in Istanbul, then prepare for our trip home. We walked along the waterfront + visited the Church of St. Therapon + the nearby Cathedral. The shops included fresh fish, deer with the eyeballs staring at us, many linen + china shops, etc. After lunch we began our packing, then went up on the sundeck + read. At 4:00 pm we had our final briefing on our debarking for Istanbul tomorrow. Dinner was followed by a talent show in the main lounge with passenger participation – what fun! We sailed at 3 pm + had a smooth sail all night. A great cruise.
4/30/98 Istanbul, Turkey
We disembarked at 9 am + went on a tour of Istanbul which included the following: 1) the Blue Mosque, the city's most famous landmark.

2) The Topkapi Saray (Palace) was a sight to behold with its interconnecting apartments, halls, gardens + courtyards. We entered the ceremonial gate + saw at the treasury bldg an 84 carat diamond + 8 pound emeralds.
3) The Grand Bazaar had 3000 shops + stalls where we spent several hours browsing.
4) Our beautiful Conrad International Hotel lived up to its 5*rating + was a welcome site after a tiresome day. We checked in about 4 pm., unpacked what we needed for tomorrow, then met John + Chung S for a cab drive to the Hanedan Restaurant (Fish House). This was a lovely setting overlooking the Bosphorus + a great way to spend the last evening of the tour before returning to the States. Our cab drive back to the hotel was scary as our driver proceeded to cut through congested, narrow streets + even attempted to cut into a one-way street going the wrong way and we barely made it! We spent over 3,000,000 TL (Turkish lira) for dinner – about $55! We retired early for our wake-up call tomorrow.
5/1/98 Istanbul – Frankfurt – N.Y. –Atlanta – Pensacola
We arose at 2:15 am for a bus departure at 3:15 am. We arrived at the airport at 3:45 + stood in a long line for over an hour – very frustrating!! We wanted our luggage tagged for Pensacola but were advised to ship to N.Y. as it was a better place to claim the luggage. Our luggage was tagged for New York + we were off to Frankfurt, where we had another hour's wait, + then we were seated across two aisles from each other for our 7-1/2 hr flight to N.Y. However I was seated next to a nice couple, Sheryl + Tom B + Bert had an aisle seat. Had a comfortable flight + Lufthansa treated us very well with delicious food, so the flight was over quickly with intermittent cat naps + good service. At N.Y. we claimed our luggage at JFK + waited several hours for our Delta flight to Atlanta. Naturally we were anxious to get home, but with a full plane there were several delays, but we were met by our dear friends, Shirley + Dick L + claimed our luggage grateful to be home safely after a wonderful trip!

8th Combat Cargo Squadron Reunion in Conn. (1997)

This was an aborted trip. The kids were still in R.I. (hadn’t moved yet.)
4-11-97 Pensacola/Jax
After spending last night with a very miserable back, it was doubtful that we’d be able to take off this a.m. to see Kent, Tamiko + Brynne who are there house hunting. Amazingly, I had a good night’s rest + we took off at 8:05. We stopped for lunch at Wendy’s in Tallahassee + arrived at the Navy Lodge at 3:00 – a 370 mile trip. (Exit 50 was a good place to get gas $1.19.)
Unfortunately the kids were not at home + we waited an hour outside the gate, then managed to sneak through the gate + got to their apartment but still no one was home. Had a lovely dinner at the China Coral near their apartment, then called + they still weren’t back so we came back to the lodge, watched some TV + retired early after a busy day.
8th Combat Cargo [Squadron] Reunion
Oct. 5, ‘97 Pensacola to Goodlettsville, Tenn
Left home at 9 am for the first leg of our trip to the reunion in Conn. We followed Rt. 65 all the way to the Nashville area except for the for the first strip on Rt. 29 to Flomaton, Ala. Small towns we passed in Escambia Co. are farming areas primarily with little industry except for Champion Paper in Cantonment. The farm lands enroute to Montgomery looked rich with a bumper crop of cotton this year. The cities we passed - Montgomery, Birmingham, Huntsville + Nashville all looked pretty much the same although the latter two seemed to have more traffic than usual, especially for a Sunday.
After eight hours of driving 451 miles we were happy to check into the Comfort Inn. It’s a ** AAA according to the book, but we’d be hard pressed to give it a *.
Our meal was very good at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant across the street.
Oct. 6, 1997 Goodlettsville - Springfield, Ohio
We got away at 8:35 and stayed on I-65 to Louisville. The scenery along the way was lovely with the rolling hills + changing colors which became more obvious that fall had arrived as we traveled north.
Changes in the I-75 + I-71 areas of Louisville – Cincy – Dayton + S’fld were evidence of a more prosperous economy.
We arrived at Mary Jane's about 3 pm - a distance of approx. 800 miles from Pensacola. It was so good seeing our dear friend doing so well as a widow of 5 years.
We had a very enjoyable evening at the Gs for dinner. Wanda + Ray are going to Conn, also.

San Antonio (1996)

10-16-96 Pensacola to Beaumont, Texas
We left home at 8:10. Beautiful fall day. Stayed on I-10 through Mobile + into Miss. passing Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport – along the Gulf Island National Seashore to the La. Welcome Center. This is where we leave Rt. 10 + take Rt. 12 to Baton Rouge. We stopped at Hammond for lunch at Wendy’s.
From Baton Rouge to Lafayette we had some construction but smooth sailing to Lake Charles where we stopped for gas. Had some rain + more construction. It was 7-1/2 hrs. to the Texas border. It was 8 hrs. to Beaumont where we spent the night at the LaQuinta Inn.
The room we reserved was on the second floor + we decided we didn’t want to carry our bags upstairs, so we checked into a first floor room. The TV didn’t work + since we wanted to watch the debates (Clinton/Dole) + the World Series play-offs (Braves/Cards) we transferred to another room.
Had dinner at Olive Garden - good.
Debate – O.K. Braves 3 – Cards-1. Yeah!
10-17-96 Beaumont/Texas - San Antonio
Left here around 8 am after good C.B. It was I-10 all the way. Stopped for lunch at a Dairy Queen at Flatonia. Chili + a Blizzard. Wow. 2 oz. Styrofoam cup of chili served with a fork. No spoons! Nothing exciting on the road: traffic as usual heavy through Houston; otherwise smooth sailing all the way to S.A. Checked into the Menger - a beautiful old hotel, completely renovated. Had a security check on our MasterCard – from the Olive Garden where we were overcharged by $5.00. Waitress or mgr – fired. Met all the happy people in the party room, our 8th Combat Cargo Group [Squadron] friends, for a few libations after talking on the phone with brother Bob + a walk through Dillards + along the river.
Our buffet was good + we all hurried to our rooms to watch the Braves/Cards game. To our disappointment the hotel didn’t carry the Fox Channel! However the Braves won 15-0. Yeah!
10-18-96 San Antonio
Our 3-1/2 hr. tour started at 9:00 am. The first stop was at the San Jose Mission. We had an excellent 25 min. film explaining the purpose of the establishment of these missions by the Spaniards during the 18th Century. The next stop was at the Lone Star Brewery + the museum which included the Buckhorn Hall of Horns, Feathers + the Wax Museum with the state’s greatest heroes. The last stop was at the Market Square. We made a second trip there after lunch + I bought a beige cotton dress with Mexican lace trim at Los Pueblitas, which I still wear, for $69.00!
The dinner at Casa Rio on the river was fun. Then a river tour, we had four boats reserved for our group + it was colorful to say the least. Our guide gave a humorous commentary on all the history of Texas – San Antonio, etc. Good, good, day!
10/19/96 San Antonio
Bob + Gen picked us up at 10 a.m. + we headed to the “Hill Country” of Texas. Millie + Tom were ready for us + we drove to the Alpine Inn in Kerrville for a wonderful buffet. (It seems as though all we do is eat!) Got back around 3:00. Bert left for the business meetings + I watched the Air Force/Notre Dame game. AF won 20-17 in overtime.
Our next reunion will be in Conn. and we’ll be able to see our kids + the changing colors that are so great in the fall in New England!
Dinner in the ballroom concluded the festivities. Next Oct’s reunion will be held at Mystic, Conn.
I played a few rounds of cards with the gals, then bid our farewells by 11 pm. Fun day.
10-20-96 San Antonio
Had coffee across the street at the Steak House, then a walk around the River Walk. Checked the Marriott where we’ll have lunch today with Bob + Gen, Linda + Michael. Came back to the room + packed for an 11 o’clock check-out. Had a delicious buffet lunch at the Marriott River Center after shopping at Foley’s where I bought a black/white jacket. We visited with Bob + Gen, then checked into our room for the night at the Sam Houston House, a lovely restored home which was built in 1886 as a 12 bed hospital. In 1935 it was converted into a barracks for 70 soldiers. After WWII it was converted into a BOQ + is now designated as part of the Ft. Sam Houston National Historic Landmark. We have a double bed, mahogany desk, end tables, frig, chest of drawers, wing back chair, color TV + beautiful Oriental wall-wall carpet. Watched the Braves/Yankees World Series game, score 12-1 Braves. Had a Domino’s Pizza for dinner in our room. Lovely!

Another fun day. Bob + Gen picked us up at 10 am. Our first stop was at the Base Chapel where we were married 6-12-48. It was built in 1909 during Wm Howard Taft's administration + is on the list of National Historic Landmarks. The stained glass windows are impressive. The quadrangle was our next stop. It’s the Headquarters for the Fifth Army. We saw the building where I worked in ’48 for the Post Engineer + had lunch at the 450 bed hospital at Brooke Army Medical. It’s a first class mess hall! Beautiful building with all the finest + most up to date medical technologies. The Fitness Bldg. was also on our tour + we were amazed at all the equipment + the Olympic size pool. Bob + Gen picked us up + we went to Tomatillos for a delicious Mexican dinner. Came back + sat on the porch until the 6th inning of the game. Score Braves 4 – Yankees 0!

We awoke to a cold northerly wind with temp. in the 50’s. After a nice low cal breakfast, we left at 8 am + drove I-10 to Beaumont – 288 miles. Had a Wendy lunch in Houston and arrived at LaQuinta about 1:00 pm. I had time for a nap + we rested + read until 5:30.
Dinner that night was at the Olive Garden where we were last Tues night when our waitress padded the bill + was promptly fired. The manager thanked us for returning + we thanked him for acting so quickly.
The World Series was our diversion for the evening. The Braves are leading the Series 2-0. Now we’ll see the outcome of tonight’s foray.

Had a good night’s sleep and after a hearty breakfast at the motel, we left at 7:45 for home.
Other than a routing of Rt. 12 through Baton Rouge, it was I-10 all the way.
We stopped for lunch at Covington, La. There were a lot of construction workers there + we inquired as to the number in that area which is north of New Orleans on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. They told us that due to the heavy crime in the city, many people are moving to this bedroom community thus the increase in home building, etc.
Shortly before 4:00 we pulled into Delchamps to shop for our dinner. After unpacking, watching the Braves lose again, we retired. We added 735 miles to the van on the return trip from San Antonio.

Rhode Island (1996)

6/11/96 Pensacola - Jacksonville
Left home at 7:30 + drove across I-10 to I-95 in Jacksonville – 360 mi. in 7 hrs. Had a Wendy lunch in Live Oak + checked in to the Quality Inn – a nice room next to the Marriott where Kent is staying.
The Osceola National Forest is a beautiful area of tall + thin pines.
Kent came over after dad + I had a refreshing swim in the pool + we went out to eat at an interesting restaurant called the Bombay Bicycle Club. We all had different shrimp dishes. Mine was a 2 fat gr. pasta dish but was so bland I added an additional gram or two of salad dressing.
Mike called + chatted for a while trying to decide on whether or not to go up to Chicago + take care of Donna's dad's house.
6/12/96 Jacksonville - Emporia, Va.
The Quality Inn offered us a very substantial breakfast; pineapple, assorted cereals, bagels, juice, bananas, coffee/tea. We got away a little after 7:00 A.M.
Places of interest that we passed were: St Mary’s River, Brunswick, + Savannah Ga., Florence + the Great Pee Dee River in S. Car, and Lumberton, Fayetteville + Rocky Mount, N. Car. Before arriving at our over night at the Best Western in Emporia, Va. about a 10 hr. drive + covering 550 miles all on I-95.
What we didn’t know about Emporia is that the second Wed. in June they hold a festival known as “park haven.” The townspeople came out to celebrate, eat + drink + take part in the festivities that go on into the night. What saved us from a noisy “abode” was a downpour + they were rained out. Yeah!
We had a nice swim + a good hearty meal at the truck stop across the street to celebrate our 48th anniversary!
6/13/96 Emporia, Va. – Fort Story, Va.
Had a very nourishing breakfast + got on the road at the usual 7 am time. We left I-95 + drove Rt. 58 toward Hampton Rds. area on Rt. 64-264-13 through the Elizabeth River tunnel to our beautiful Cape Henry Inn situated on the cusp of Chesapeake Bay + Atlantic Ocean. This is an Army military reservation.
We took a 1-1/2 hr. cruise on the paddle wheel Carrie B. She’s a replica of the 19th C Miss. River boat + we sat on the top deck taking in the sights: the site of the battle of the famous ironclads - the Merrimac + the Monitor. We saw cruise + cargo ships, supertankers + tugboats in action as they sailed past Waterside + the Norfolk skyline. We saw other ships being repaired in the elaborate floating drydocks. After our cruise we ate in the Waterside shops before driving back to our inn.
Had dinner at a local family-type restaurant at Va. Beach called Charlie’s Seafood. Sat on our porch + viewed the ships.
6/14/96 Fort Story, Va. - Mt Holly, N.J.
Hit the road about 8 am. With the first leg of our trip crossing the 17-1/2-mi. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which is the longest of this type in the world. Salisbury, Md. was the next sizeable city of interest in the Delaware Peninsula. Before reaching it however, we took a side trip out to Assateague Island where we found a real treat touring the interesting Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge where we were able to see the wild horses “ponies.” There are two herds of about 150 in each – one in Va. + one in Md. They’re descended from domesticated stock that has grazed there since the 17th C by Eastern Shore planters. Many many shore birds were there for our viewing. We were impressed with the two big bridges over the Delaware Canal + Delaware R. On Rt. 13 we passed Dover AFB + lots of good rich farm land. Perdue chickens are big in this area. From the New Jersey Turnpike we took Exit 5 at Mt. Holly + the Best Western for a good night’s rest after dinner at the Wedgewood Family Restaurant in Burlington with a delicious seafood buffet - the best meal on the whole trip!
June 15, 1996: Mt Holly, N.J. - Providence, R.I.
Had a leisurely trip today, leaving at 8:00 + arriving here a little before 2:00. Traveled the New Jersey Turnpike to the Garden State in N.J. then Rt. 287 across the Tappan Zee Bridge. From there we connected at Norwalk on I-95. Lots of heavy traffic + construction in the New Haven area. At E. Haven we stopped at a Friendly's for lunch, then drove on to Providence on I-95. It was just a 269 mi. drive.
Kyle + Erich were here for dinner + we all sang Happy Birthday to Kent as he cut the delicious chocolate cake. We received a beautiful flower arrangement for our anniversary + a clever gift basket of garden tools.
Our evening was spent watching the Wellsville video catching a few laughs along the way.
Had a call from Mike telling us that Donna's dad passed away at 6:30 a, this morning. It was a blessing that he didn’t have to suffer any longer.
6-16-96 Providence, R.I.
More celebrating today. For Father's Day the kids gave Bert a tool set for the car + several nice cards. Kent was treated to a couple dozen golf balls + cards from Brynne, Erich + Kyle. Our breakfast was a delicious combination of bagels, juice, melon, scrapple + coffee. The boys left for church + the beach.
Soccer was the diversion for the afternoon. Brynne’s team, the Equadors won 5-0, and she played her heart out – partly the reason the team won!
Kent made pizza when we came home, we had showers, played games + watched TV.
We packed for our trip tomorrow to visit the Gs at the Cape.
6-17-96 Providence/Cape Cod
We spent the next few days on Cape Cod - visited Ann +Jim G - friends from Marco Island.
We left after breakfast for the Gs – Ann + Jim – in Brewster on the Cape. We traveled I95 to 25 – then Rt. 6 across Sagamore Bridge. Exit 10 on Rt. 124 to 176 Nelson St.
Places we visited included: Ft. Hill – overlooking Town Cove + the Nauset Marshes. We saw a film on the Cape Cod National Sea Shore at the Salt Pond Visitors Center. We viewed the Atlantic Ocean + the Coast Guard Station. On the way back to Brewster we stopped in Orleans + saw the Community of Jesus right on the parking lot of Rock Harbor. Then we saw the site of the battle where the militia repulsed the Br. Fleet in the War of 1812. A full, fun packed day with our dear friends!
Jim cooked delicious swordfish steaks on the grill + Ann prepared a wonderful potato + vidalia onion dish + a salad of greens from their veg. garden – a real treat.
6-18-96 Cape Cod
After a delicious breakfast we started our morning tour of the Brewster area at the p.o. + a card + book gift shop. Jim drove us down Lower Rd. for a picturesque drive of the quaint old homes. We saw white-belted steer, marshes, the boardwalk to the Bay, the Snack Windmill, Harris Block House (1795), the Stoney Brook Grist Mill + Herring Run. At the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History the duck display by the famous Chinese wood sculptor, Mr. Ma was outstanding. I love the beautiful rosa rugosa, the native Cape Cod rose.
In the afternoon we went to Chatham + Hyannis – a very scenic drive. We weren’t able to get out on the pier to see Kennedy’s compound, but we saw Rose’s church where she attended mass every day. Claire + Jack G from Yarmouth Port (also Marco friends) came over for a delicious seafood dinner + a beautiful day.
6-19-96 Cape Cod
We drove to the Lobster Claw in Orleans for a delicious lunch with Ann + Jim. They gave us some cuttings from their beautiful roses (rosa rugose) + some fresh lettuce from their garden before bidding farewell to a fun-filled two-day visit with these dear Brewster friends.
We left for Providence around 1:20 + drove a little over two hours to Kent’s – 88 miles. We took the scenic Rt. 6A through the Cape seeing: Dennis, Yarmouth. Yarmouth Port, Barnstable, + Sandwich before crossing the Sagamore Bridge into New Bedford + Fall River.
For dinner we went to the 99 Restaurant-Pubs in Seekonk. It was an interesting family type place with good food.
Brynne read to us before we went to bed. Fun day.
6-20-96 Rumford
We did a little shopping in the a.m. Got a squirrel trapper at the bird store in Seekonk. Then got back to Kent’s in time to check out the bug control man.
Kent came by for us a little before 3 pm to go to Kyle's high school graduation. What a treat. It was held in the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium + we were there early enough to get choice seats + we were seated in the same row as Kyle - across the aisle. It was a lengthy program but very well organized. Kyle played his bass with the orchestra. There were approx. 250 Classical H.S. grads - 90% go on to college.
From 7-9 we went to Mary Jane’s. Met Kyle’s + Erich’s friends, had a nice conversation with her dad, Paul. A good social evening. They weren’t able to get tickets for everyone, so Tamiko + Brynne joined us at Mary Jane’s + I rode back to Rumford with Tamiko.
Brynne read to us again + we retired early.
6-21-96 Rumford
Bert and I attended Brynne's awards assembly at her school, the Myron C. Field [Francis] Elem. It was very well organized. Each grade lined up + received their awards on the bleachers as their names were called. Brynne received a certificate for high honors (all A’s), spelling bee winner for all first graders + a few other certificates. Afterwards we got coffee at McDonalds + lunch at Greggs. I organized for packing tomorrow + the trip home on Sun.
The boys came over for dinner. We had Chinese food + played a Chinese murder mystery game. I’m not good at solving mysteries but found it to be fun + it included the whole family, even sharpy Brynne. The dessert was a lemon meringue pie from Greggs that was a foot high.
Before retiring we watched a video of the awards ceremony that Tamiko taped.
Fun day.
6-22-96 Rumford
We left around noon for Uxbrudge, Mass. It was a rainy day + we stopped at Purgatory Chasm where Kent + the kids explored the rocks + Bert, Tami + I took the Nature Trail.
We ate lunch at a pizza restaurant + then set out to find Barb H’s Tapestry Gardens. We finally found it after touring the village.
We talked on the phone to Lil + Bob C, Barb's father from Marco days, while the kids bought some perennials from Barb H, the Cs’ daughter.
We drove back to Rumford + while Kent + Tamiko planted their newly purchased plants, Bert + I packed for home.
The boys left + then Kent picked up Boston Mkt chicken + we had a good dinner.
Retired early for the trip back to Pensacola tomorrow tomorrow.
6-23-96 Rumford - Winchester, Va.
This has been an interesting day: We left Kent's around 7 am + drove 478 miles, traveling through eight states as follows: R.I., Conn., N.Y., N.J., Pa., Md., W. Va., and Va. How’s that for an 8-1/2 hr. rip!?!
I drove the first lap of I-95 to Ex. 54 about 90 mi. At Exit 38 we took the Merritt Pkwy. to Rt. 287 + traveled it to Rt. 78. At Johnny’s Restaurant we stopped + ate our packed lunch. We left N.J. when we crossed the Delaware R. into Pa. We passed Stroh's, Nestles, + several other large plants in the Lehigh Valley south of Allentown. Lots of luscious farmland. We crossed the Susquehanna R. into Harrisburg area, then Carlisle, Shippensburg, Chambersburg all on Rt. 81 + finally to Winchester + the Comfort Inn.
We walked across the street to Chasons Country Buffet – our second time + it lost its appeal. It wasn’t nearly as good as it was when we were here in ’94. We’ll try something else the next time.
6-24-96 Winchester, Va. - Lookout Mtn, Tenn.
We got away early because of the long trip to Chattanooga today. We had lunch at Bristol, Tenn. + shortly after leaving Wendy’s, it poured down rain + it continued for about 45 min. Practically all day we were on Rt. 81, the roads and scenery were fine – beautiful farms + luscious greenery. When we arrived in Knoxville, we were slowed down due to an electrical storm + more heavy rain. We started on Rt. 40 + stayed on it until Lenoir City when we picked up Rt. 75. We were happy to check into our room at the Comfort Inn at Lookout Mtn. I had a quick swim while Bert showered, then I shampooed + we had dinner down the road at a little Barbecue Rest. Circle C. Watched “Twin Lies” on TV – Jamie Lee Curtis + Arnold Schwarzeneger. 9-1/2 hr. on the road - 535 mi. Good day.
6-25-96 Lookout Mtn – Pensacola
This was the last leg of our trip to Rhode Island and not a lot happened today.
After a breakfast of coffee, juice, + donuts we got on the road at approx. 7:30.
The Comfort Inn at Lookout Mtn was not up to par + for $54.00 one could expect more amenities. We plan to pursue their status.
All the rest of the trip was fine, beautiful day, alternating the driving, stopping in Ga. for 99¢ gas, still cheap, then on to Birmingham on Rt. 59.
We ate lunch at Priester’s Pecans south of Montgomery at Ft. Deposit. It was a novel place + we ate sandwiches weighed by the ounce.
We arrived home safe + sound at 2:30, having stopped at the p.o. to pick up the mail. Wonderful trip of 1406 miles from R.I. (Now back to reality – ugh!!)
6/11/96 Pensacola - Jacksonville
Left home at 7:30 + drove across I-10 to I-95 in Jacksonville – 360 mi. in 7 hrs. Had a Wendy lunch in Live Oak + checked in to the Quality Inn – a nice room next to the Marriott where Kent is staying.
The Osceola National Forest is a beautiful area of tall + thin pines.
Kent came over after dad + I had a refreshing swim in the pool + we went out to eat at an interesting restaurant called the Bombay Bicycle Club. We all had different shrimp dishes. Mine was a 2 fat gr. pasta dish but was so bland I added an additional gram or two of salad dressing.
Mike called + chatted for a while trying to decide on whether or not to go up to Chicago + take care of Donna's dad's house.
6/12/96 Jacksonville - Emporia, Va.
The Quality Inn offered us a very substantial breakfast; pineapple, assorted cereals, bagels, juice, bananas, coffee/tea. We got away a little after 7:00 A.M.
Places of interest that we passed were: St Mary’s River, Brunswick, + Savannah Ga., Florence + the Great Pee Dee River in S. Car, and Lumberton, Fayetteville + Rocky Mount, N. Car. Before arriving at our over night at the Best Western in Emporia, Va. about a 10 hr. drive + covering 550 miles all on I-95.
What we didn’t know about Emporia is that the second Wed. in June they hold a festival known as “park haven.” The townspeople came out to celebrate, eat + drink + take part in the festivities that go on into the night. What saved us from a noisy “abode” was a downpour + they were rained out. Yeah!
We had a nice swim + a good hearty meal at the truck stop across the street to celebrate our 48th anniversary!
6/13/96 Emporia, Va. – Fort Story, Va.
Had a very nourishing breakfast + got on the road at the usual 7 am time. We left I-95 + drove Rt. 58 toward Hampton Rds. area on Rt. 64-264-13 through the Elizabeth River tunnel to our beautiful Cape Henry Inn situated on the cusp of Chesapeake Bay + Atlantic Ocean. This is an Army military reservation.
We took a 1-1/2 hr. cruise on the paddle wheel Carrie B. She’s a replica of the 19th C Miss. River boat + we sat on the top deck taking in the sights: the site of the battle of the famous ironclads - the Merrimac + the Monitor. We saw cruise + cargo ships, supertankers + tugboats in action as they sailed past Waterside + the Norfolk skyline. We saw other ships being repaired in the elaborate floating drydocks. After our cruise we ate in the Waterside shops before driving back to our inn.
Had dinner at a local family-type restaurant at Va. Beach called Charlie’s Seafood. Sat on our porch + viewed the ships.
6/14/96 Fort Story, Va. - Mt Holly, N.J.
Hit the road about 8 am. With the first leg of our trip crossing the 17-1/2-mi. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which is the longest of this type in the world. Salisbury, Md. was the next sizeable city of interest in the Delaware Peninsula. Before reaching it however, we took a side trip out to Assateague Island where we found a real treat touring the interesting Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge where we were able to see the wild horses “ponies.” There are two herds of about 150 in each – one in Va. + one in Md. They’re descended from domesticated stock that has grazed there since the 17th C by Eastern Shore planters. Many many shore birds were there for our viewing. We were impressed with the two big bridges over the Delaware Canal + Delaware R. On Rt. 13 we passed Dover AFB + lots of good rich farm land. Perdue chickens are big in this area. From the New Jersey Turnpike we took Exit 5 at Mt. Holly + the Best Western for a good night’s rest after dinner at the Wedgewood Family Restaurant in Burlington with a delicious seafood buffet - the best meal on the whole trip!

8th Combat Cargo Squadron Reunion in Lexington, VA (1995)

In October 1995, we had an interesting five-day trip to Lexington, VA for our 8th Combat Cargo Group [Squadron] Reunion. We had Doc and Ann E to thank for planning such a wonderful tour to Charlottesville and Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home.
10-14-95 Pensacola – Sweetwater, Tenn.
This is our first leg of our trip to Lexington, Va. for our 8th Combat Cargo Grp [Squadron] reunion.
We took the usual route from Pensacola – Montgomery – Birmingham – Chattanooga – Sweetwater – 457 miles in 9 hr.
Lunch at Cracker Barrel in Birmingham delayed us one hour but the grilled catfish was good.
There was a mix-up on our reservation at the Comfort Inn. We were confirmed for last night but they had a room + hopefully we won’t be charged for two nights.
Since we had a big lunch, Bert got us take-out at McDonalds + we watched the Braves-Reds in the fourth game of the Series. The score was 6-0 – Bbraves. They go to the World Series!! Yeah!!
10-15-95 Sweetwater – Lexington, Va.
We had a continental breakfast + left about 8:45. Patches of fog kept us well within the speed limit as we traveled Rt. 75 to Knoxville.
The fall colors were in their prime + we enjoyed the beautiful rolling hills through Tenn. + Va.
Had lunch at Wendy’s in Wytheville and proceeded on our journey along Rts 81 + 64, arriving in Lexington about 3:30.
Quite a few of the squadron arrived today + we congregated in Room 300 for welcoming everyone.
The Es, Doc + Ann, were the perfect hosts + it looks as though Lexington + its environs will have a lot to offer in the way of sightseeing this week.
Our room at the Inn at Hunters Ridge is quite nice.
10-16-95 Inn at Hunt Ridge – Lexington, Va.
This was a fun day! Weather perfect for sightseeing – cool, crisp fall day so we took advantage of it.
After breakfast we drove into town and first looked up Stonewall Jackson’s tomb, then went to the Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon before his untimely death at the age of 39 during the Civil War.
We’ve always known what a great general + statesman Gen. Geo. C. Marshall was, but after visiting the museum where we viewed the movies + toured all areas, did I realize how noble a character he was.
Our evening meal was a self-serve buffet + a card game afterwards with the girls. I was one of the big winners – came back with 80¢ profit.
10-17-95 Lexington
One thing I forgot to mention yesterday was our interesting trip to the Natural Bridge which is the 7th Natural Wonder + it was purchased for $2.40 by Thos. Jefferson from King Geo. III. It’s higher than the Niagara Falls + quite a spectacular sight.
Today’s activities included a tour of Lexington: VMI, Wash. + Lee College, Stonewall Jackson’s tomb + the Presby. Church where he was a deacon, and a very interesting Marshall Museum.

We boarded the bus early for a tour of Monticello, Thos. Jefferson’s home which he designed from very innovative ideas. He couldn’t live without books, he was continually learning with a zest for knowledge. He founded the U. of Va. In addition to all his other accomplishments: drafted the Declaration of Independence, Gov. of Va., Sectry of State, Vice Pres., + Pres. After the tour, we went to the Michie Tavern where we had a feast of fried chicken, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, cole slaw, pot. salad, green bean salad, beets, cornbread + apple cobbler. I bought a cook book at the general store featuring those recipes.
Our tour ended about 3:30 + again we praised God + the Es – Doc + Ann, for planning such a beautiful tour for us.
Had a nice swim in the indoor pool + played cards with the gals. Again I was the big winner of the pot - $1.05!
Ate dinner in the Hunt Ridge restaurant, then ended the evening by watching the Indians beat the Mariners 4-0 + now our Cleve. guys go to the World Series.
Lexington
Today Jan + Mel C from Santa Barbara joined us for a trip to Staunton to view the historical area.
First we had a tour of Pres. Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace + museum. He was born in the Presbyterian manor as his father was a Princeton educated minister. He lived there with his parents + two sisters in this lovely 12 room home.
From there we visited the Museum of Amer. Frontier + Culture which focused on working farms and traditional cultures brought together from England, Germany, and Northern Ireland. The Amer. farm showed a synthesis of all three cultures.
Of all the areas in the U.S., this Shenandoah Valley ranks #1 in my book!
Our dinner at the Lexington Country Club was lovely. Only glitch – the bus forgot 10 of us – oh well!
10-19-95 Lexington to Gadsden, Ala.
Left the Inn at about 8:30 on Rts 11 + 81 to Roanoke where we exited at 150A + bought a bushel of apples, gallon of cider + two qts of jam + apple butter.
It was a beautiful drive all the way thru Knoxville, Sweetwater, Chattanooga, and on to Gadsden where we spent the night at a new nicely furnished Hampton Inn.
Went across the road to the Gadsden Mall where we had “The Works” at Morrisons.
Watched Seinfeld + then retired early for a good night’s rest.
We drove 510 miles today.
In October 1995, we had an interesting five-day trip to Lexington, VA for our 8th Combat Cargo Group [Squadron] Reunion. We had Doc and Ann E to thank for planning such a wonderful tour to Charlottesville and Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home.
10-14-95 Pensacola – Sweetwater, Tenn.
This is our first leg of our trip to Lexington, Va. for our 8th Combat Cargo Grp [Squadron] reunion.
We took the usual route from Pensacola – Montgomery – Birmingham – Chattanooga – Sweetwater – 457 miles in 9 hr.
Lunch at Cracker Barrel in Birmingham delayed us one hour but the grilled catfish was good.
There was a mix-up on our reservation at the Comfort Inn. We were confirmed for last night but they had a room + hopefully we won’t be charged for two nights.
Since we had a big lunch, Bert got us take-out at McDonalds + we watched the Braves-Reds in the fourth game of the Series. The score was 6-0 – Bbraves. They go to the World Series!! Yeah!!
10-15-95 Sweetwater – Lexington, Va.
We had a continental breakfast + left about 8:45. Patches of fog kept us well within the speed limit as we traveled Rt. 75 to Knoxville.
The fall colors were in their prime + we enjoyed the beautiful rolling hills through Tenn. + Va.
Had lunch at Wendy’s in Wytheville and proceeded on our journey along Rts 81 + 64, arriving in Lexington about 3:30.
Quite a few of the squadron arrived today + we congregated in Room 300 for welcoming everyone.
The Es, Doc + Ann, were the perfect hosts + it looks as though Lexington + its environs will have a lot to offer in the way of sightseeing this week.

10-16-95 Inn at Hunt Ridge – Lexington, Va.
This was a fun day! Weather perfect for sightseeing – cool, crisp fall day so we took advantage of it.
After breakfast we drove into town and first looked up Stonewall Jackson’s tomb, then went to the Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon before his untimely death at the age of 39 during the Civil War.
We’ve always known what a great general + statesman Gen. Geo. C. Marshall was, but after visiting the museum where we viewed the movies + toured all areas, did I realize how noble a character he was.
Our evening meal was a self-serve buffet + a card game afterwards with the girls. I was one of the big winners – came back with 80¢ profit.
10-17-95 Lexington
One thing I forgot to mention yesterday was our interesting trip to the Natural Bridge which is the 7th Natural Wonder + it was purchased for $2.40 by Thos. Jefferson from King Geo. III. It’s higher than the Niagara Falls + quite a spectacular sight.
Today’s activities included a tour of Lexington: VMI, Wash. + Lee College, Stonewall Jackson’s tomb + the Presby. Church where he was a deacon, and a very interesting Marshall Museum.

We boarded the bus early for a tour of Monticello, Thos. Jefferson’s home which he designed from very innovative ideas. He couldn’t live without books, he was continually learning with a zest for knowledge. He founded the U. of Va. In addition to all his other accomplishments: drafted the Declaration of Independence, Gov. of Va., Sectry of State, Vice Pres., + Pres. After the tour, we went to the Michie Tavern where we had a feast of fried chicken, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, cole slaw, pot. salad, green bean salad, beets, cornbread + apple cobbler. I bought a cook book at the general store featuring those recipes.
Our tour ended about 3:30 + again we praised God + the Es – Doc + Ann, for planning such a beautiful tour for us.
Had a nice swim in the indoor pool + played cards with the gals. Again I was the big winner of the pot - $1.05!

Hurricane Erin (1995)

Aug. 1, 1995: Marco Island - Pensacola
Because of a “tropical depression” forming near the coast of South Fl., and after a lot of soul searching, we decided to leave the island and head north. We coordinated our plans with Mike + decided we’d spend the night in St. Pete with Mary + Bill R. As we neared their area, however, Erin was headed near them in the direction of Tampa Bay, so we opted to drive on to Pensacola, and Mike + Donna stayed in Pembroke Pines.
As we neared the Panhandle we felt relieved to be in safe haven – we thought.
Ryan, who’d accompanied us on this 11-1/2 hour journey, helped us unload the van + we took comfort in our storm-free home + crashed early.
Aug. 2, 1995 Pensacola
Although we kept in touch via radio + TV of Erin's progress, we left early in the morning for NAS, feeling safe taking off to show Ryan parts of Pensacola. We had lunch at the Ready Room + showed Ryan the air museum, then returned home via downtown + East Hill to show him the old homes + influence of British, Spanish + French architecture in the lovely old homes.
Keeping our eye on the storm, we prepared for a possible hurricane by making several casseroles, drawing water, getting candles, batteries, etc. - ready just in case. We discussed with Ryan the worst scenario we could expect, relaxed + watched some Letterman shows, he designed more homes + we had a fun evening.
When we retired, we felt comfortable with the latest reports on Erin’s expected hit sometime Thurs., - possibly La. – not Pensacola!
Aug. 3, 1995 Pensacola
At 6:15 am we awakened with the startling TV news – Pensacola was Erin’s target + we could expect her arrival about 9:30.
More preparations were made. The propane stoves were uncovered in a stack of boxes in the garage. We moved Ryan out of the guest bedroom + moved the collection of old pitchers away from the window. (They were part of mother’s collection + we wanted to keep them for children + grandchildren.)
We busied ourselves drawing houses (Ryan), cleaning, reading, + all the time watching weather reports.
At approximately 9:45, when I just finished boiling water for a second cup of coffee, we lost power + put the battery operated radio to work. Don Parker was a Godsend because he stayed with us via WCOA for the rest of the day. These are the highlights from this point on throughout the day.
10:25 - Erin approached downtown Pensacola. The eye is 30 miles wide. Sheriff’s admin. bldg. reported blown out windows + computer damage.
We were pummeled with branches + tree limbs + the cover of the chimney making a crashing sound, but we had to wait until the “eye” reached us because of the high winds, to go check on the damage. For a period of about one hour it was calm +”seemingly” over. Then the winds shifted + came from the SW instead of the NE where they originally were. They clocked them at 94 mph.
12:20 – The eye passed over Pensacola. Power lines were down throughout the city. Many trees were downed in Summer Lakes.
I made phone calls checking on the Ls, Ls, Ys, and Genie, next door. Everyone experienced similar losses as we.
When the storm was over, Ryan + I took a walk in the neighborhood. We met new ones who’d just moved in across the street – a German couple, a pilot named Neils + the family who’s name I didn’t get. (They lived in town + bought H’s house.) Some roofs were damaged, but mostly trees lost were the extent of damage.
Hemet B called from Alaska around 8 o’clock. He’d been worried about his home across the street + hadn’t been able to reach the realtor.
Roberta B called from Wis. + we kept in touch with Bob + Gen throughout the day. It was difficult getting calls through.
Bert heated the tuna casserole on the propane stove. Then we talked to neighbors + came inside because of the light rain.
We played cards with Ryan by candlelight. Then all of a sudden, “Hallelujah” the power came on + we were back in civilization.

Mike arrived about 11 am from Tallahassee to pick up Ryan. They helped Bert carry off some of the large branches.
The clean-up has begun throughout Escambia, and from what we’ve seen on TV, read in the paper, and comments from people in town + from Mike who came across the bridge on I-10, we’re very, very lucky to have minimal damage!
